ABOUT US

Who We Are

Save the Mothers East Africa (STM) is a non-governmental organization dedicated to reducing preventable maternal and newborn deaths through innovative, multidisciplinary, and community centered approaches.

Established in 2005, STM was founded to address the persistent challenges contributing to maternal and newborn mortality. Through its strategic pillars of leadership training and research, community engagement, sustainability, and alumni network strengthening, STM empowers leaders and communities to develop innovative, locally driven solutions that improve maternal and newborn health outcomes.

Our work contributes directly to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3, particularly Target 3.1 on reducing maternal mortality and Target 3.2 on ending preventable deaths of newborns and children under five.

At STM, we believe that safe motherhood is not solely the responsibility of the health sector. Maternal and newborn health is shaped by social, economic, cultural, educational, legal, and health system factors, requiring collaboration across multiple sectors and disciplines. Through leadership development, research, and health facility strengthening, STM advances community-driven and system-level solutions that improve the health and well-being of mothers and newborns.

Our Strategic Pillars

Leadership Training & Research​

We equip multidisciplinary professionals with the knowledge, skills, and leadership competencies needed to address maternal and newborn health challenges while generating evidence to inform policy and practice.

Community Engagement

We work alongside communities to identify barriers to safe motherhood and support locally driven solutions that improve maternal and newborn health outcomes.

Sustainability

We strengthen systems, partnerships, and local ownership to ensure that interventions continue to create impact long after project implementation.

Alumni Network Strengthening

We support a growing network of graduates and professionals who champion maternal and newborn health through leadership, advocacy, innovation, and collaboration across sectors.

STM delivers these strategic pillars through two core programs:

Master of Public Health Leadership (MPHL):

A multidisciplinary master’s program delivered in partnership with Uganda Christian University that equips professionals to lead change in maternal and newborn health within their sectors and communities.

A health systems strengthening initiative working with health facilities to promote safe, respectful, and dignified maternity and newborn care through training, mentorship, and quality improvement.
