Save the Mothers Expands Lifesaving NICU Services at Amai Community Hospital

Save the Mothers East Africa, in partnership with Uganda Christian University, has strengthened newborn survival at Amai Community Hospital in Amolatar District through the expansion of its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Globally, an estimated 2.3 million newborns die every year, with Sub-Saharan Africa bearing the highest burden. Uganda’s neonatal mortality rate remains approximately 22 per 1,000 live births, highlighting the urgent need for strengthened newborn care systems in line with SDG 3.2.

Before the intervention, critically ill newborns were referred over 150 km away, contributing to delays and preventable deaths. In 2022, STM established a Level I NICU, which progressively increased admissions from 165 newborns in 2022 to 367 in 2024.

Due to rising demand, the facility was upgraded in February 2025 to a Level II NICU with expanded equipment including incubators, oxygen systems, and phototherapy machines, increasing capacity to 10 newborns at a time.

The NICU now serves an average of 25 newborns per month, significantly improving survival outcomes for premature and critically ill infants in Northern Uganda.

This intervention directly supports SDG 3.2: ending preventable deaths of newborns and children under five, contributing to stronger health systems and improved survival rates.
